Giant Fish, Edge-Traced

A giant fish gliding through blue water — built on an edge-traced structure. An artist drew the cell boundaries around the fish’s outline before photo matching began, so the silhouette holds as a distinct boundary and fine detail survives the translation into cells.

Project Context

A demonstration of Edge-Traced Photo Mosaic Design: subject-aware cell structure for images whose outline carries the picture.

How It Was Made

  1. 01

The artist identified the fish’s silhouette and the water’s tonal bands as the structures worth preserving.

  2. 02

Cell boundaries and regions were drawn by hand around the outline — larger calm regions in the water, finer cells along the body.

  3. 03

Photo-matching software then filled the designed cells with suitable photographs from the source collection.

This project uses artist-designed edge-traced cells — see how edge-traced design works.

A Structure Designed by an Artist

Edge-traced cells are drawn by a designer around the subject — a professional service technique, not a software setting.
